About us

Word Worker is a PR and copywriting agency founded by journalist Jo Smyth

Jo Smyth owner of PR and copywriting agency Word Worker Jo began her career as a cub reporter back in the days of typewriters (just) when copy was typed in triplicate – one copy for the news editor, one for the subs and one for the spike!

She moved from reporting to news editing and then sub-editing for regional newspapers, before swapping life as an employee to become a freelance, writing features for national women’s and parenting magazines. She covered topics ranging far and wide, from how to treat nappy rash, to sex education lessons for couples!

Jo dipped her toe into PR to help an ex-colleague who was running the comms team at Great Western Trains and has never looked back.

As owner of Word Worker, founded in 2009, Jo uses her innate understanding of how the media works to get her clients coverage online, in print and on air, putting them in front of the people that matter – their customers – and enhancing their brands’ reputation.

Jo uses her copywriting skills to position her clients as experts in their field, drafting tightly written text for websites, blogs, social media posts, award entries or marketing content – perfectly pitched at the audience, giving clarity and consistency to clients’ messages.

And when Jo is snowed under – as happens from time-to-time – she has carefully-selected, former journalism colleagues she can call on to help out, who have the same high standards and are also working in PR.

"Jo has been an exceptional find for Activate Marketing. Her copywriting skills have helped our clients to shout about the benefits their services and products bring to their customers, while her PR experience has helped us to promote clients in the right way to maximise their business profiles. She is a hugely supportive colleague and a delight to work with and I am more than happy to recommend her services to any business that requires PR support."

Steve Manning, Activate Marketing

"Jo wrote a press release for me to promote my live streaming Blab show and the 'Mortgage Moments' podcast. I had two calls within 15 minutes of it being published to do mortgage reviews and it has opened up doors for me in other areas of my business. I would consider it a huge success and would recommend Jo for anyone looking to increase awareness and drive people to your business."

Danny Matthews, The Actual Danny

"Jo has an excellent understanding of the PR needs for owner managed businesses and I have happily referred several clients to her who I know have found her service offering extremely helpful."
