Do you struggle to find time to write a blog? Do you lack inspiration? Are you worried your writing skills will let you down? Maybe a mix of all three?

These are the three questions we posed recently when we ran a poll on LinkedIn to find out why so many people either don’t write a blog or, more commonly, let their blogging lapse.

Here’s what we found:

  • 44% said they lacked inspiration
  • 33% said they didn’t have enough time
  • 22% said they didn’t have confidence in their writing skills

We were surprised to see ‘lack of inspiration’ polled the highest (we thought it would be ‘not enough time’).

If this resonates with you, then here are few tips for getting inspired:

  1. What are your clients’ problems that you solve and why do they come to you? Your blogs could focus on the benefits and outcomes of your service, and not the nuts and bolts of how you do what you do.
  2. Check out your competitors. What are they blogging about? This should give you some ideas for your own blog (but be careful to use the ideas as a source of inspiration only, and not to plagiarise the text).
  3. What is happening in your sector that affects your clients? Showcase your expertise by talking about up and coming changes.
  4. Look at national awareness days, or seasonal events. Do any of these relate to what you do? If so, they could inspire a blog.
  5. Finally, look back at your old blogs. You could refresh and repost them and they’ll be found by a new audience.

Now, if you were among the 33% who said they lacked time, then there are one of two options.

Plan your diary, so you make the time for writing a blog. Blogs are a really excellent way of putting fresh content on your website, and you can use them for social media posts, to drive traffic back to your site.
